The San Sebastian International Film Festival celebrated its 70th anniversary last September and I was lucky enough to be able to attend such a special edition. The anniversary was also honoured with a complete exhibition at the Tabakalera contemporary art centre, you can read more about it in my previous post.

It seems that we are leaving covid-19 and its restrictions behind us. We have been able to experience a festival like the ones of years ago and I must admit that it feels amazing.

Different national and international celebrities walked the red carpet: Diane Kruger, Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Penelope Cruz, Ana de Armas, among others. In addition, this year’s festival also featured two Donostia Awards: Juliette Binoche and David Cronenberg.

The festival leaves us with early mornings to see the first session in the beautiful Victoria Eugenia Theatre, delicious pintxos between films, great catch-ups with old friends and of course hours and hours of intense emotions that I wish they’d never end. I would like to tell you about my favourite films of this edition:

Top 5 of this edition

1. Los renglones torcidos de Dios
   It is not easy to choose my favourite film of this edition, but if I had to choose one, it would be the film based on Torcuato Luca de Tena‘s masterpiece. The story revolves around Alice Gould, a private investigator who voluntarily enters a psychiatric hospital to investigate her latest case. The seventies aesthetics, Bárbara Lennie‘s splendid performance and, of course, its twisted plot line. What is real and what is illusion?
   
   
2. Triangle of sadness
   Ruben Östlund, who left no one indifferent with The Square, brings us on this occasion another crazy satire of society. The director will make us reflect on topics such as social inequality, consumerism and the use of social networks today.
   
   
3. As bestas
   Presented in the Perlak section, Rodrigo Sorogoyen‘s dark story takes us deep into Galicia. The film tells us about the life of a French couple in a Galician village and the continuous conflict they have to face with some of their neighbours. I would highlight the performances of Denis Ménochet and Luis Zahera.
   
   
4. L’innocent
   This is the latest film directed and starred by Louis Garrel. The French director offers us a fun crime comedy with a romantic touch in which any crazy situation is possible.
   
   
5. Blonde
   This year’s surprise film shows us the tortuous life of the Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe, played this time by the fabulous Ana de Armas. A film that is sure to get people talking!

El Festival de cine de San Sebastián ha cumplido 70 años el pasado septiembre y tuve la suerte de poder asistir a una edición tan especial. El aniversario fue también homenajeado con una completa exposición en el centro de arte contemporánea de Tabakalera, podéis leer más sobre ello en mi anterior publicación.

Da la impresión que vamos dejando atrás el covid-19 y sus restricciones. Hemos podido vivir un festival como los de antes y debo admitir que sienta fenomenal.

Diferentes celebridades tanto de ámbito nacional como internacional han paseado por la alfombra roja: Diane Kruger, Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Penelope Cruz, Ana de Armas, entre otros. Además, el certamen contó esta vez con dos premios Donostia: Juliette Binoche y David Cronenberg.

El festival nos deja madrugones para ver la primera sesión matinal en el precioso Teatro Victoria Eugenia, pintxos entre peli y peli, reencuentros con buenos viejos amigos y por supuesto horas de intensas emociones que ojalá nunca acabasen. Me gustaría comentaros mis películas favoritas de esta edición:

1. Los renglones torcidos de Dios
   No es sencillo escoger la película favorita de esta edición, pero si debo elegir una sería el largometraje basado en la obra maestra de Torcuato Luca de Tena. La historia gira entorno a Alice Gould, investigadora privada que interna voluntariamente en un psiquiátrico para investigar su último caso. De la película me quedo con su estética setentera, la espléndida actuación de Bárbara Lennie y por supuesto su retorcida línea argumental. ¿Qué es real y que es ilusión?
   
   
2. Triangle of sadness
   Ruben Östlund, que no dejó a nadie indiferente con The Square, nos trae en esta ocasión otra disparatada sátira de la sociedad. El director nos hará reflexionar sobre temas como la desigualdad social, el consumismo y el uso de las redes sociales en la actualidad.
   
   
3. As bestas
   Presentada en la sección Perlas, Rodrigo Sorogoyen nos adentra con su oscura historia en la Galicia profunda. El film nos relata la vida de una pareja francesa en una de sus aldeas y el conflicto continuo que deben afrontar con parte de sus vecinos. Destacaría las actuaciones de Denis Ménochet y Luis Zahera.
   
   
4. L’innocent
   Se trata de la última película dirigida y protagonizada por Louis Garrel. El director francés nos propone una divertida comedia de cine policiaco con toque romántico en la que cualquier situación descabellada será posible.
   
   
5. Blonde
   La película sorpresa de esta edición nos muestra la tortuosa vida de la estrella de Hollywood Marilyn Monroe, interpretada esta vez por la magnífica Ana de Armas. ¡Está claro que el film va a dar mucho que hablar!
