Merry Christmas and Happy new 2017!
I hope you all had a good Christmas time and that you are ready and motivated to face this new year.
Last December was very special. I had been wanting to visit Scandinavia for a long time and thanks to Göteborg & Co and Visit Sweden I had the chance to get to know Gothenburg, Sweden.
Personally, I am not used to travelling during winter time and at first sight cold and daylight hours can discourage. However, I was able to verify that it can turn out a different sort of experience. The christmas atmosphere of the decorated streets is really worth living through.
Not to mention everything that this city offers, which allows you to experience unforgettable moments: it architectural style, the wide cultural offer, delicious gastronomy (pay attention please fish and seafood lovers), the Swedish good taste for design and decoration, the friendliness of the local people, to be able to speak English everywhere, it is an unending list…
I have so much to tell you! I would like to give you some recommendations if you decide to visit Gothenburg in winter:
- Enjoying a julbord or christmas buffet might be a good first contact with the Swedish gastronomy and customs. The reception outside of the restaurant Sjömagasinet drinking a glögg or mulled wine by a bonfire, warms you up quickly. The old warehouse dates from 1775, being nowadays a picturesque restaurant with a Michelin star. In the inside: the chimney, the cosy ambiance, the comes and goes to the buffet make you feel at home. The buffet consists of several kinds of herring, salmon, cold meat, pork and dessert, among others.
- Walking the old streets of Gothenburg, going into shops and cafes is a sheer delight. You just have to go all over Haga and Linné areas. Besides, there you can go up to the Skansen Kronan fortress where you can find some good rooftop views.
- In Sweden the coffe break is called fika. It is more than just drinking coffee and eating yummy pastry. It is the moment to share and connect with family, friends and workmates. You can try fika almost in every cafe, I would recommend a few that I had the pleasure to try: da Matteo, Kafé Magasinet y Språkcaféet. In this last one even language exchanges take place.
- You cannot leave Gothenburg without visiting the temple of fish called Feskekörka, which literally means fish church. The building grabs attention outside and inside. In the inside you can find the market and the restaurant Restaurang Gabriel run by Johan Malm, the current Oyster opener world champion. The wide range of fish and seafood, together with the friendly service and the peculiar setting make the meal a special experience.
- As I said at the beginning of the post, Gothenburg has a wide cultural offer. I would like to remark two museums which are placed side by side. The Världskulturmuseerna or World culture museum and the science centre Universeum where you can get into an amazonian rainforest or enjoy the aquarium. Both museums are for adults and children, who will specially enjoy them.
- If you visit Gothenburg at Christmas…you cannot miss the amusement park Liseberg! it is the biggest amusement park in Scandinavia and during the Christmas time it turns into the biggest christmas market of Sweden. There, you will find different themed areas where to enjoy the attractions, buy arts and crafts, drink and eat some of the local specialities or even visit Santa Claus’ workshop! Moreover, every year there’s an ice skating show, being this year Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. Magical moments for both adults and children.

Feliz navidad y próspero año nuevo!
Espero que hayáis pasado unas buenas navidades y que estéis preparados para afrontar con mucho ánimo e ilusión este nuevo año.
El pasado mes de diciembre fue muy especial. Hacía tiempo que quería visitar Escandinavia y gracias a Göteborg & Co y Visit Sweden tuve la oportunidad de conocer Gotemburgo, Suecia.
Personalmente, no estoy acostumbrado a viajar en invierno y a primera vista el frío y las horas de luz pueden desanimar. Sin embargo, pude comprobar que es un tipo de experiencia diferente y que de verdad merece la pena poder vivir el auténtico ambiente navideño que se respira en las adornadas calles de Gotemburgo.
Por no hablar de todo lo que puede ofrecer esta ciudad que permite que vivas momentos inolvidables: su estilo arquitectónico, la amplia oferta cultural, deliciosa gastronomía (atención amantes del pescado y marisco), el gusto que tienen los suecos por el diseño y la decoración reflejados en todos los ámbitos, la amabilidad de sus habitantes, poder comunicarte en inglés sin problemas, la lista es interminable…
Tengo tantas cosas que contaros! Me gustaría proporcionaros una serie de recomendaciones en caso de que decidáis viajar a Gotemburgo en navidad:
- Disfrutar de un julbord o buffet de navidad puede ser un buen primer contacto con gastronomía y costumbres suecas. El recibimiento en la entrada del restaurante Sjömagasinet bebiendo un glögg o vino caliente junto al fuego, hace que entres en calor rapidamente. El antiguo almacén de madera que data de 1775 es ahora un pintoresco restaurante que cuenta con 1 estrella Michelín. En el interior: la chimenea, el buen ambiente, las idas y venidas al buffet hacen que te sientas como en casa. El buffet consta de varios tipos de arenques, salmones, embutidos, carnes y postres, entre otros.
- Caminar por las antiguas calles de Gotemburgo, entrar en sus tiendas y cafés es un placer para los sentidos. Para ello no hay más que recorrer los barrios de Haga y Linné. Además, justo en medio de ambas áreas se puede subir hasta la fortaleza de Skansen Kronan desde donde disfrutar de las vistas.
- En Suecia la pausa del café se cuida al detalle y la llaman fika. Es algo más que beber café y comer deliciosa bollería. Es el momento para compartir y conectar con familia, amigos y compañeros de trabajo. Podéis probar el fika casi en cualquier cafetería, yo os recomendaría las siguientes que tuve el placer de conocer: da Matteo, Kafé Magasinet y Språkcaféet. En este último incluso se realizan intercambios de idiomas.
- No puedes irte de Gotemburgo sin haber visitado el templo del pescado llamado Feskekörka y que literalmente significa iglesia del pescado. El edificio llama la atención tanto por fuera como por dentro. En el interior además del mercado se halla el Restaurang Gabriel regentado por Johan Malm, actual Campeón mundial de apertura de ostras. La deliciosa variedad de pescados y mariscos junto al cercano trato y la particularidad del edificio hacen de la comida una experiencia única.
- Como he comentado al comienzo del post, Gotemburgo dispone de una amplia oferta cultural. Me gustaría destacar dos museos que además se hallan uno junto al otro: El Världskulturmuseerna o Museo de la cultura mundial y el centro de ciencias Universeum en el que por ejemplo os podréis adentrar en una selva amazónica o disfrutar del aquarium. Ambos museos son para todas las edades especialmente recomendables para el público infantil.
- Si visitáis Gotemburgo en navidad…visita obligatoria al parque de atracciones Liseberg! Se trata del parque de atracciones más grande de Escandinavia y durante la época navideña se convierte en mercado de navidad más grande Suecia. En el podréis encontrar diferentes zonas temáticas donde disfrutar de atracciones, comprar objetos de artesanía, beber y comer algunas de las especialidades típicas, o incluso visitar el taller de Santa Claus! Además, todos los años se representa una función de patinaje sobre hielo, siendo este año el Cascanueces de Tchaikovsky. Momentos mágicos tanto para mayores y como para pequeños.
Después de haber leído este post espero que tengáis una idea más clara de como puede ser un viaje a Gotemburgo. Para mi ha sido una bonita experiencia que incluso me deja con más ganas de volver a Suecia. Si queréis saber más o tenéis alguna pregunta en concreto, no dudéis en dejarme un comentario!
