As I mentioned in the previous blog post, coming home is always an absolute pleasure, but even more if the reason is to attend the 69th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Given the current situation, everything requires much more organization, effort and a quick ability to adapt to changes. The measures applied due to covid make this festival a safe and well-coordinated event by a staff that is always attentive and involved. For this reason, first of all I would like to thank the festival for making possible an event of such magnitude and for always making us look forward to this very special week of September.

I must admit that arriving from Berlin and starting almost straight away watching films at a frenetic pace, capturing the festival with my camera, posting on social media and enjoying gatherings with old friends can be quite a challenge. 😃

11 films over 5 intense days loaded with a high dose of emotion and inspiration.

Top 5 of this edition

1. El buen patrón
   It is not surprising that the film by Fernando León de Aranoa has been selected to represent Spain at the Oscars. With an outstanding performance by Javier Bardem, the audience will enjoy this critical comedy of the traditional and corrupted business model, in which nothing will surprise you anymore!
2. The eyes of Tammy Faye
   Laughter and tears guaranteed with the spectacular Jessica Chastain, who actually won the Silver Shell for best leading performance.
3. È stata la mano di Dio
   Paolo Sorrentino arrived at the festival with his latest film, an autobiography that shows a teenager willing to find his place in a picturesque Italy in the 1980s.
4. The power of the dog
   Apparently just another western genre movie. However, you will soon find yourself immersed in an intricate plot with unexpected twists. I’d like to highlight those spectacular New Zealand landscapes and the performances of Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee. By the way, the film was awarded with the Premio Sebastian in this last edition.
5. The French dispatch
   Pastel colours, obsessive symmetries, tracking shots that transport you through its settings, undoubtedly Wes Anderson in its purest state. Visually one of my favourite films but this time the story was, for my taste, a little more difficult to follow.

Hopefully the stars will align and I will be able to attend the next 70th edition of the Zinemaldia, which promises to be very special.

Como contaba en la anterior entrada del blog, volver a casa siempre es un placer, pero aún más, si el motivo es asistir a la 69ª edición del Festival de cine de San Sebastián.

Dada la situación actual todo requiere mucho más organización, esfuerzo y una rápida capacidad de adaptación a los cambios. Las medidas adaptadas por el covid hacen de este festival un evento seguro y bien coordinado por un personal siempre atento e implicado. Por ello, ante todo me gustaría agradecer al festival por hacer posible un evento de tal calibre y llenarnos siempre de ganas por que llegue esta tan especial semana de septiembre.

Debo admitir que llegar de Berlín y comenzar casi directamente a ver películas a ritmo frenético, capturar el festival con mi cámara, publicar en redes sociales y disfrutar de reencuentros con viejos amigos puede ser todo un reto. 😃

Top 5 de esta edición

1. El buen patrón
   No sorprende que el film de Fernando León de Aranoa haya sido seleccionada para representar a España en los Oscars. Con una magnífica interpretación de Javier Bardem, el espectador disfrutará con esta comedia crítica del modelo empresarial tradicional y corrupto, ¡en el que ya nada te sorprenderá!
   
2. The eyes of Tammy Faye
   Risas y llantos asegurados con una espectacular Jessica Chastain, que de hecho consiguió la Concha de plata a la mejor interpretación protagonista.
3. È stata la mano di Dio
   Paolo Sorrentino llegó al festival con su último film, una autobiografía que muestra un adolescente con ganas de encontrar su lugar durante una pintoresca Italia de los años 80.
4. The power of the dog
   Aparentemente otra película más de genero western. Sin embargo, enseguida te verás sumergido en una intrincada historia de giros inesperados. Me quedo con esos espectaculares paisajes de Nueva Zelanda y las actuaciones de Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst y Kodi Smit-McPhee. Por cierto, fue la ganadora del Premio Sebastiane de esta última edición.
5. The French dispatch
   Colores pastel, simetrías obsesivas, travellings que te transportan a través de sus escenarios, indudablemente Wes Anderson en estado puro. Visualmente una de mis películas favoritas pero en esta ocasión la historia era, para mi gusto, un poco más difícil de seguir.

Esperemos que los astros se alineen y pueda asistir también a la próxima 70a edición del Zinemaldia, que promete ser muy especial.
