Have you ever had the feeling of not appreciating the places you’re used to?
Pasajes (or Pasaia in Basque) is one of those places to me. I’ve known it since I was a child, but I’ve only just started discovering its beauty these past few years.
I love misty rainy days at the Pasaia port, without a doubt they have something mysterious. Every time I go back home for a holiday I go for a walk in its old streets camera in hand. Below are some tips for those who don’t know the area.
3 things to do in town
- Start at the Pasajes de San Pedro riverside and visit the Albaola Factory, where a replica of a Basque whaleship from the 16th century is being constructed.
- Take a motorboat to cross the bay and get to the Pasajes de San Juan side (or Pasai Donibane in Basque). You can walk till the inlet, then taste some fresh seafood back at the square.
- Did you know that Victor Hugo was in Pasajes de San Juan on one of his trips? The famous French writer left proof of it on his book «The Alps and the Pyrenees» and the house where he stayed in is now a museum.

¿Has tenido en alguna ocasión la sensación de no apreciar un lugar al que estar muy acostumbrado?
Pasajes (o Pasaia en euskera) es para mi uno de esos lugares. Lo conozco desde que era pequeño y sin embargo empecé a ver su belleza hace tan solo unos años.
Me encantan esos días de lluvia cuando la bruma se mete en el puerto dando un aire muy misterioso. Cada vez que vuelvo a casa de vacaciones siempre intento dar un paseo por sus antiguas calles cámara en mano. A continuación me gustaría darte unos consejos en caso de que no conozcas la bahía.
3 cosas que hacer en Pasaia
- Comienza en el lado de Pasajes de San Pedro visitando La factoría de Albaola, donde se está construyendo la réplica de un buque ballenero de siglo XVI.
- Usa la motora para cruzar la bahía y llegar a Pasajes de San Juan (o Pasai Donibane en euskera). Puedes caminar hasta la bocana y luego volver a la plaza del pueblo para degustar en uno de sus restaurantes el fresco marisco.
- ¿Sabías que Victor Hugo estuvo en Pasajes de San Juan durante unos de sus viajes? El celebre escritor dejo constancia de ello en su libro «Viaje a los Pirineos y los Alpes» siendo hoy en día un museo la casa donde se alojó.

Was the port not also the site of a horrible ambush by the Guardia Civil?
Also, would have liked to see/read more about the fishing industry there.

Love these photos. We had a couple of days in San Sebastian in October and decided it was an area we wanted to explore more. Hopefully sometime in the future we’ll be able to.

Oso polita/ an-álainn/ very lovely.
For me, it is not only how a place looks now that I want to appreciate but what happened there, how it changed, in other words it’s history. The architecture, for example, is mostly not recent but to me seems very Basque.
