Hello everyone!

I’m writing to you once more from my room in Berlin. How is autumn going? I’m sorry I can’t spend more time on the blog, but loads of things have been happening lately…I’ll try to keep you more updated during 2018 😉

Some months ago I got a very interesting proposal from France. Deauville tourisme invited me to get to know Deauville for a weekend and at the same time the photography Festival planche(s) contact, which I will talk to you more about on the next post.

An unforgettable experience at the Norman coast

I must admit that it really was a weekend not to forget: discovering this gorgeous coastal city, attending all the events related to the Planche(s) contact festival, seeing internationally renowned photographers….the whole made my birthday weekend turn out to be one of the best ones.

Next, I’d like to show you 5 reasons why Deauville is worth visiting:

• Enjoy the seaside so close to the French capital
  In my case, I took a flight from Berlin to Paris and then just after a 2 hour train I was enjoying the sea breeze. I found it a really good option for those who are thinking about travelling to Paris and would like to go on a short trip to the coast. There’s nothing compared to autumnal beach walks, picking up some seashells from the sand (which now decorate my Berlin desk) while the horseriders gallop at the shore.
• The Belle époque still lingers
  Walking the streets of Deauville means going back to the Belle époque. Deauville shares a similar past to San Sebastian, since both of them were a summer resort since the end of the 19th century.  The benefits given by bathing in the sea and the visits by the emperor Napoleon III made it fashionable, attracting the aristocracy and parisian bourgeoisie. Thereafter, houses and palaces with this peculiar Norman style were built,  then the casino and the racecourse. As you can see from the photos, I also visited the Deauville-La Touques racecourse during the trainings.
• A fairytale hotel
  Deauville tourisme couldn’t be a better host and I had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Barrière Le Normandy. This hotel, recently renewed but opened in 1912, makes your days in Deauville a magical stay. The establishment still keeps its old design and wide corridors, which some time ago were walked by celebrities such as Winston Churchill or Coco Chanel(who by the way opened her first boutique in Deauville).
• Following in the footsteps of the Hollywood stars
  If you visit Deauville you can’t miss its famous Les Planches promenade. Bette Davis, Rock Hudson, Ian McKellen or Jessica Lange are just some of the names you will find at the doors of the beautiful beach cabins. Since 1975 the Deauville american film festival has been taking place, where different celebrities of the American film industry are honoured annually.
• A manor rooted in the past
  Before taking my train back to Paris I had the chance to visit Deauville’s own Downton Abbey. The Villa Strassburger , recognized as a historical monument, was property of the Baron Rotschild and later Ralph B. Strassburger’s. In 1980 the mansion was donated to the city and nowadays it’s possible to visit it and rent it for events. I was surprised to see how well preserved the place is and how many artefacts from those past times have been kept.

Hola a todos!

Desde mi habitación de Berlín os escribo una vez más. ¿Cómo ha ido el otoño? Siento no poder dedicarle el tiempo que me gustaría al blog, pero son tantas las cosas que han ocurrido durante estos últimos meses…para el 2018 me pongo como meta manteneros más al corriente 😉

Hace unos meses recibí una propuesta muy interesante desde Francia. Deauville tourisme me invitaba a conocer durante un fin de semana la ciudad de Deauville y a la vez su festival de fotografía Planche(s) contact, del que os hablaré más en una próxima publicación.

Una experiencia inolvidable en la costa normanda

Debo admitir que fue un fin de semana para no olvidar: descubriendo esta bonita ciudad costera, acudiendo a los eventos de Planche(s) contact, viendo fotógrafos de reconocimiento internacional….todo ello hizo que el fin de semana de mi cumpleaños resultara muy especial.

A continuación, me gustaría exponer 5 razones por las que merece la pena hacer una escapada a Deauville:

• Disfrutar del mar tan cerca de la capital francesa
  En mi caso, tomé un vuelo de Berlín a París y luego un tren con el que en tan solo 2 horas estaba disfrutando de la brisa del mar. Me pareció una muy buena opción para aquellos que viajan a París y quieren hacer una pequeña escapada a la costa. No hay nada como pasear por la playa en otoño, recoger unas conchas (que decoran ahora mi mesa de Berlín) mientras los jinetes galopan por la orilla.
• Aun se respira la Belle époque
  Caminar por las calles de Deauville significa volver a la Belle époque. Deauville posée un pasado muy similar al de San Sebastián, ya que fue centro de veraneo desde finales del siglo XIX. Los beneficios de los baños de mar y las visitas del emperador Napoleón III  la ponen de moda, atrayendo a la aristocracia y burguesía parisina. Se construyen así sus casas y palacios de estilo normando, más tarde llegarán el casino y el hipódromo. Como podéis ver en las fotos, visité el Hipódromo Deauville-La Touques durante los entrenamientos.
• Un hotel de cuento de hadas
  Deauville tourisme me trató fenomenal y tuve la gran suerte de alojarme en el Hotel Barrière Le Normandy. Este hotel, recientemente renovado aunque inaugurado en 1912, hace de tu días en Deauville una mágica estancia. El establecimiento mantiene su antigua decoración, amplios pasillos que en su día recorrieron personajes como Winston Churchill o Coco Chanel(que por cierto abrió su primera boutique en Deauville).
• Tras los pasos de las estrellas de Hollywood
  No os podéis ir de Deauville sin visitar su celebre paseo marítimo de Les Planches. Bette Davis, Rock Hudson, Ian McKellen o Jessica Lange son tan solo algunos de los nombres que encontraréis a las puertas de las cabinas de baño. Y es que desde 1975 se celebra cada año el Festival de cine americano, en el que entre otras cosas, se homenajea a diferentes celebridades del cine americano.
• Una mansión anclada en el tiempo
  Antes de coger mi tren de vuelta a Paris tuve la oportunidad de poder visitar el Downton Abbey deauvillais. La Villa Strassburger , reconocida como monumento histórico, fue propiedad del Barón Rotschild y más tarde de Ralph B. Strassburger. En 1980 la villa fue donada a la ciudad y en la actualidad se puede visitar y alquilar para eventos. Me sorprendió comprobar su buen estado de conservación y como se han mantenido una gran cantidad de objetos de la época.
